More info on Neddiran

Fauna of Neddiran

This post is more for me, but would be nice for you guys so you know what’s in my world, Neddiran. This contains most of the more fantastical animals in Neddiran. These beasts are called the ‘Great Beasts’ by zoologists. Hope you enjoy!

Pegasus:

Used by island countries, this magnificent beast is reserved for royalty. Pegasi can achieve respectable speeds in the air, but the wings hamper galloping, so it is not as fast as normal horses. Weak spot is belly. Light armor has been made but most people cannot afford such gear (of course if they have a Pegasus in the first place they should be pretty dang rich).

Chimera:

One of the most feared of the Great beasts, chimeras prefer mountain ranges and foothills. Extremely invasive and hard to kill, due to the three heads, fire breathing, and armored body.

There are very few left. They still like to make their presence known to the locals by destroying villages and eating the livestock. Presents a good challenge for heroes who want to make a name for themselves.

Phoenix:

A rare breed of eagle that lives in volcanoes. Attracted to the sound of smelting iron. Once big enough, cyclopes use them as bombers, spitting fireballs at the enemy. They can also see on the spiritual level and avoid graveyards and the like (so would you if you could see the spirits).

Yrestradae (fire Pegasus)

Pegasus + phoenix = Yrestradae. A not so rare sub-species of pegasi. They have the Curse of the Phoenix. Ordinarily, the Yrestradae looks like a black Pegasus, but when excited or nervous it begins to burst into flame. Unrideable, but still trainable.

Hydra:

Kind of like the Earth eaters in the Hobbit (David). Multiple heads and long serpentine body to navigate tunnels. Their name is a miss anomer because they hate large bodies of water. Almost no threat unless disturbed, in which case you will die.

Griffin:

Cousins to the phoenix, griffins are used as patrols of cycloptic mountain fortresses. Huge wingspan of around 40 feet, can easily carry fully armored knight into battle. They can also be fitted with their own armor. Relatively common in the mountains.

Drakon:

Not dragon, drakon. The ocean-going cousin to the dragon. Very hostile, intelligent and hungry. Dwells in immense sea caves on the coasts. Can exceed lengths of 600 feet. Usual prey are blue whales and giant/colossal squid.

Dragon:

The cousin to the drakon. It has a fiery temper (get it?!). Once it hatches, a dragon keeps growing until it dies. Only two individuals, a male and a female, can survive at any one time. More would eventually drain resources and destroy the civilizations of Neddiran. Able to master language and use it, dragons are very persuasive. Just for future reference, the dragons alive during the books are Ryrrocrys Hotbreath and his mate Nypos Grayheart.

Wyrm:

Tunnels an extensive network of tunnels in sand dunes and underneath beaches. If you’re are caught in their territory, they will grind you into a mound that looks suspiciously like hamburger meat. If you couldn’t tell, wyrms are very hostile, but still hard to kill. They breed every few months, so they can be very hard to get rid of (kind of like scorpions mixed with mole).
